Sixteen-year-old, Santa Barbara-based singer/songwriter Sofia Schuster is releasing a new single on July 31st 2020. That Friday, her song “Mr. Right” will become available on Bandcamp and SoundCloud, and in August will be available on Spotify, too. “Mr. Right” is Schuster’s second solo project, recorded through Syryn Records, in music producer Jen Baron’s home studio.

Schuster began writing songs when she was eight years old, through the Girls Rock Santa Barbara summer camp. In fourth grade, she lost her voice for a month and a half, and doctors were worried she would never be able to sing or talk again, soon after that, she started playing guitar to ease her ache for music. Although her voice recovered, she still writes with her acoustic guitar. “When I’m performing my original songs, I have a very acoustic feel, as I only use my acoustic guitar. But when I produce my songs, I tend to go in a more pop direction.” “Mr. Right” uses simple guitar for the melody, but keeps with Schuster’s promise of happiness and fun.

“Mr. Right” is a mix of bubbly pop music and strong, grounded vocals that transport you back to middle school sleepover parties and school dances. It is the kind of song that makes you want to jump on the bed with friends, using a hairbrush as a microphone and singing loud enough to wake the neighbors. It places you right in the midst of a classic movie montage.  Schuster’s lyrics are the innocent words of a high school girl, but her vocals are mature and full. You can tell that the song has been influenced by singer-songwriters like Taylor Swift, and other female artists who found their place in so many young girls’ hearts.

“The lyrics of the song always make me feel nervous, but in a good way, like the butterflies you get when you see the guy you like. That’s my goal with this song, to make the listeners feel something, whether that be happiness or not. The lyric ‘bonfire at the beach at ten, I don’t think I can wait til then,’ sums up the song to me, as it’s really about high school relationships and just having fun while you’re still young.”
