Released in 2020, “my future” is the new single from international pop icon Billie Eilish. While most might be taking a well-deserved break during quarantine, Billie and her brother/producer Finneas took the time to write and produce a new single that managed to garner 25 million views in a matter of days.

Billie starts the song with her melancholic vocals pulling us into yet another seemingly sad song. The song leans even more into the ‘sad song’ rhetoric with lyrics like “Can’t you hear me? I’m not coming home” that are accompanied by a minor chord progression. However, right around the middle of the song, a drumbeat and gentle guitar riffs are added, effectively switching the tone of the song from sad to optimistic. The lyrics begin to reflect this as well, with Eilish singing lines like “And I, I’m in love/ but not with anybody else/ just wanna get to know myself.”

Sonically, she has taken full advantage of her light and airy vocals to fill “my future” with emotion and vulnerability, and Finneas’s genius production helps to set the atmosphere for every part of the song. Meaning-wise, this single is a stark contrast to her older and much more self-deprecating songs like “idontwannabeyouanymore,” as it chooses to view life from a more positive perspective. Lyrics like “Cause I, I’m in love/ with my future/ can’t wait to meet her” showcase this optimism by stating that Eilish is finally starting to look forward to and love her future for what it is. “my future” is just another example of the way Billie Eilish has grown as both a person and a musician.
