Gracie Nash, an up-and-coming artist based in NYC, just released her EP, “Power Lady.”
This album screams 60’s/70’s vibes with the jazzy tones. With six songs ranging from a love story to country pop to a fun and silly folk song, this album is fun and unique, and that’s what made me fall in love with it!
The album starts with “Lovestruck,” setting a theme about falling in love with Motown mixed with a 60’s/70’s girl’s group. This song shows her true vocal range with the lyric “Help me! I’m lovestruck.” The horns and backing guitar make for a very funky that makes you want to get up and dance around.
“Sippy Cup” follows Lovestruck. With a country-pop flare, this song is about regaining your power rom men after a relationship. “Can’t get much from a sippy cup,” is a lyric over a banjo picker. This refers to an earlier verse, “Would a banjo picker that’s a real good kisser ever be a good idea?” Overall, Sippy Cup is a fantastic classic country-pop jam.
Next, we move into “Summer Release,” a dreamy piano-led, Southern love song with warm vocals and a mellower feeling compared to the last two pieces on this EP. From here, we move into a magical intro from “The One I’m Dreaming Of.” With beautiful, airy vocals, it gives more of a 50’s jazz feel. The song gives the visuals of Gracie dancing around in a big sparkly ball gown in a dim room.
Gracie comes through with a bang called “Better Off,” a self-empowerment song and self-love and not needing a man to be happy. With an upbeat track in the background, this song makes you want to dance around while singing this powerful anthem.
Last but not least is “The Belly Song.” At first can be seen as a silly children’s song, but in reality, it’s a body positivity anthem about loving yourself. The knee-slapping mixed with the laughing in the background brings a comforting feeling to the song.
I had the pleasure of asking Gracie Nash a few questions; here are the answers I got!
Q- What made you drift towards vintage pop?
A- I grew up listening to golden oldies so that music always held a special place in my heart!
Q- How old were you when you knew that you wanted to pursue a career in music?
A- I started songwriting around the age of 11-so throughout my adolescence, it became pretty clear that music was my happy place.
Q- What is the story behind this album?
A- I wrote this album during the process of falling out of love with someone else and falling in love with myself. Each song captures a moment of this process.
Q- How has music changed your perception of the world?
A- I love this question! The thing I love about music is that it’s a universal language. One of my favorite memories was at a Billy Joel concert at Madison Square Garden. The stadium was packed, and everyone in the audience sang along to every word of every song.
Q- Does your style influence your music in any way?
A- Absolutely! It’s no secret that I’m obsessed with ’60s and 70’s fashion.
Q- What has been your favorite song to perform and why?
A- I LOVE performing The Belly Song. While on the surface, it may seem like a silly & childish little diddy, I’ve found that adults really resonate with the message.
Q- What is one of your goals for your career?
A- I would love to play a show where everyone in the audience knows every word to one of my songs 🙂
