Based in L.A, TemperMental is an all-girl rock band featuring Krissy, Marilaine, Jordan, and Ruby. Performing in multiple fairs, conventions, and festivals across L.A, they have made a name for themselves in the rock band community. In a male-dominated genre, these girls are proving that women can do it too and add their own unique sparkle to the genre. Each girl brings different talents to the group, making TemperMental truly unlike any other band. Currently working on new music and an album, here are a few words from them and who they are!

We are a great put together package of female artists, with great music, harmonies, and a unique style”

Where did TemperMental get their name and start? Has anything changed from when the group first started and now?

We were all trying to think of names that we liked one week when it first started and we all came to rehearsal with lists. Ruby brought the name TemperMental. Her family was sitting around the kitchen table one night listening to music and thinking of band names and so she suggested that. Tempo-Mental was actually thrown around at some point too but we didn’t really like that and TemperMental just felt like a fitting name for a group of teenage girls. Everybody loved it and so we became TemperMental.

Ruby, Marilaine, and Krissy all met working on set as campers for the Netflix series “Wet Hot American Summer Ten Years Later.” When we were kids we used to do some acting and background work. Marilaine would bring her violin to practice for homework for orchestra class and she eventually started bringing in her guitar or ukulele to play while we were in holding and doing school stuff. We would all sit and sing together on set during the breaks and as we got to know each other better we learned we all were very into music.

Right after the show wrapped Marilaine’s band broke up. She was really sad about it and wanted to start a new one, so her mom suggested starting an all-girl rock band. She and one of the other girls from set were hanging out a lot and they decided to get that started. Ruby and Krissy were called along with a few other girls that they knew. They all showed up to start the band, but most of them did not stick around.

We met Jordan a bit later at a battle of the bands. She ran up to us to show us her bleeding hands after her set. She’s a beast on the drums and we kept running into her at other shows after that. We loved her so much and her drumming was so good. We had just lost our first drummer, so we asked her to join our band!

When we first started out, we definitely weren’t at the level we are now. Ruby had never even played bass when we started and Krissy sang more pop-style stuff. She had been singing for many years but did a different style of music with musical theater training. When we first started the band, we were really young, 11-15, and played a very different type of music. It was a lot more of a pop-punk style. We needed these past few years to really develop our style and sound. Now it’s a lot harder rock and a much different concept in general and we are so happy with the direction that it’s going. We also used to dress differently than we do now. Some of us are really crazy about clothes, accessories, and shoes.

What artists inspired Tempermental’s sound and feel?

My Chemical Romance, Paramore, Pierce the Veil, Dance Gavin Dance, Hollywood Undead, Evanescence… We’ve had a lot of people tell us we look like Mötley Crüe too, but that isn’t on purpose! Even though we like Mötley Crüe! Several of us have backgrounds in musical theater and we tend to be a little more theatrical and dramatic, so that has inspired our style too.

What does the creating process look like when you are making new music?

Sometimes someone will bring in songs completely done and sometimes one of us will bring in lyrics and we will put music to that and sometimes we all write together. We have also tried writing the instrumentals first and then putting lyrics to the songs. It depends on the song. When making new music, we each kind of have our own style of writing but we really like to write all together to bounce ideas off each other too and it’s really fun. Marilaine likes to write a whole lot and sometimes she will call one of us and be like let’s write and then we will write a song over the phone together.

We usually start with some type of chord progression or guitar riff and then try and work from there. Sometimes we start with lyrics but we find it easier to start with the base chords and foundation. Whatever way we come up with our songs once they are done we bring them in and work on them together, make changes if needed and finish them up!

What is Tempermental’s ritual before performing?

We typically begin by singing a Gregorian chant about Pete Wentz, and then we all take turns writing complex math equations onto the wall of whatever venue we’re playing with glitter markers. No, we’re kidding! But in all seriousness, there isn’t that much of a ritual. Krissy usually warms up her voice and the rest of us just try and make sure everything is going to run smoothly. We used to do a huddle hug dance thing before we went on to perform… we should start doing that again!

Is there a favorite performance among the group? We want to hear all about it!

Probably one of our most recent ones… It has to be one we did recently at Anime LA. We were playing on the main stage and it was just a really fun show, we just had a really good vibe on stage that day. The stage and the sound were great! The fire alarms actually went off during our set (probably because we were rocking so hard) and we had to stop for a bit. Luckily it was a false alarm but it was pretty funny at the time. The next day we played another show at anime la on a much smaller stage. It wasn’t really big enough for us and there wasn’t enough mics for all of us but we made it work. We had a great crowd that day, it turned out to be really fun because of the crowd.

Outside of the group, are there any hobbies the group members participate in?

Yes!

Ruby – I love fashion, decorating, exercising, doing my makeup and I also like painting and crocheting.

Marilaine – I love to draw a lot, and write. I write a lot of songs and stories. I have a lot of OC’s I make and use in stories. I also run track at my school.

Krissy – I love baking, doing my makeup and skincare, styling outfits and making clothes, dancing, and watching anime.

Jordan – I play a lot of sports and love animals but school and music take a lot of my time.

What would be the group’s dream collab?

We would all love to work with My Chemical Romance for a song. We all love them a lot! Any type of clothing or shoe company would be awesome! We would love to work with Mattel and Monster High for a line of dolls! A couple of us really love Monster High dolls!

What are you gals listening to at the moment?

My Chemical Romance, Pierce the Veil, Hollywood Undead, Artificial Selection by Dance Gavin Dance and The Ritual by King Mothership

The Used, I Prevail, Sleeping with Sirens, Incubus, Falling in Reverse, Royal Blood, Palaye Royale

Tell us about some crazy group experiences! Whether it be during a performance, a fan meeting, etc!

We’ve had a lot of crazy experiences. We’ve had people try to jump up on stage with us and take pictures while we were performing, old people yelling at us over what we’re wearing. We had an old guy screaming at us that we’re going to hell and he called us “falling stars” and “skunks” because Ruby was wearing a crop top and a skirt that day. It’s honestly really funny because they get so offended by our existence. I guess it’s expected, it happens with so many bands who play rock music. There was one show we were playing at a street fair and all the sudden we started seeing all these people walking down the street towards us wearing our t-shirts and hoodies. It was such a cool day because we had a crowd of people who were there specifically to see us and for the first time we knew our fans were there! And there was actually a lot of them! That was a crazy cool day!

Are any of you working on solo projects?

Marilaine – For me personally, I write a lot of music. I used to do solo music but took some time off to focus solely on the band. However, I wouldn’t count it out completely, you never know what may happen in the future.

Krissy – I have in the past, but I really prefer being in a band or working with multiple people. It’s just way more fun for me personally getting to enjoy music in a group. I am having fun working on a chill project that I play with different styles/genres of music in.

Ruby – I am not right now I used to have one but I stopped working on it to focus on TemperMental

Jordan I’m working on a solo project right now and working on recording some new music for it.

With all groups there’s qualities that set them apart from the rest, what would be those qualities for TemperMental? In other words: what makes TemperMental, TemperMental?

We have a unique music sound, we are heavier than a lot of the girl bands we see right now. Most do a lot of punk music, which is totally cool too! We love that! We just do something a bit different from that. Our music is heavy but still pretty and not over the top heavy but definitely heavier than most. We all sing and we use a lot of harmonies and that helps with our sound as well. We have spent a lot of years coming up with our sound and image and we feel like we are a great put together package of female artists, with great music, harmonies, and a unique style. Our image isn’t something you see every day.

And finally, what is Temperamental up to? When can we expect new music?

We are just finishing up our album and we’re very happy to announce that our first single off our album is coming out on February 25th! It’s called “Come With Me.” We can’t wait for everyone to hear it and for everyone to see the video! So make sure you check it out!
