Warpaint is back with a new song titled “Champion” that will be on their very much anticipated new album “Radiate Like This.” Warpaint is an indie rock band from Los Angeles. The band members are Theresa Wayman (vocalist and guitarist), Emily Kokal (vocalist and guitarist), Jenny Lee Lindberg (bassist), and Stella Mozgawa (drummer). Critically acclaimed producer Sam Petts-Davies produced “Champion.”
The song did not disappoint. Reminiscent of the 2016 “Heads Up” album, it has the signature Warpaint sound: Mesmerizing vocal harmony, repeating bass groove, beautiful guitar melodies, and accurate, textured drumming patterns.
The song begins with a brief sample and a lush synth. The opening line is “I’m ocean.” The song has the feel of relaxing and floating in the middle of the ocean. The song progresses to a danceable beat with very catchy singable lyrics in the chorus. The song is about being a champion to oneself and others, which is a great outlook and mantra to live by daily. The rhythm section propels the song forward and builds up midway leading to a wall of sound in its own right.
✎ First Impressions
The song has a relaxing chill vibe to it. Yet, it has an underlying sense of hope and self-love. Additionally, the beautiful instrumentation perfectly highlights each member’s talent.
✎ The Feels
Overall the song has a calming feel to it. Reading the lyrics, lines such as
“We’re all the same sun, We’re all our own sun too”
makes the song all more comforting. It makes us listeners feel apart of their journey, especially after an album release in six years. Even so, Warpaint’s legacy and talent shines through with this amazing song. They will definitely set a standard for indie rock groups with their new single and upcoming album!
