WAKABA HIGUCHI
Wakaba Higuchi competed in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. The 21 year old Japanese figure skater performed an electrifying crowd favorite – “The Lion King” routine during her free skate performance. Wakaba Higuchi looked graceful while performing her routine. Her vibrant red and orange dress gave the illusion of fire on ice; she radiated power and fierceness! Wakaba landed two smooth triple axles and placed 5th place. Wakaba received a total of 214.44 points in Women’s Free Skate.
What makes Wakaba Higuchi’s outfit iconic is the luminous colors used in her outfit and the beautiful sparkling rhinestones embroidered in the dress. There was a bit of green and blue color on the front of the outfit where the rhinestones flared out. The shape reminded me of a peacock’s feathers. Higuchi wore a gold headpiece with red gems, tying the whole outfit together. Fashion designer Satomi Ito created Wakaba’s stunningly detailed outfit. Wakaba also wore natural makeup to match her outfit and lion king theme. She wore red lipstick, peach toned blush and eyeshadow. Lastly, Wakaba wore white skates to complete her look.
Wakaba’s outfit is memorable because her colorful dress stood out in the all white skating rink. Her sparkly, tulle dress was perfect for her performance. Wakaba is well liked because she is a very talented figure skater and she shows passion in her routines. Distinguished figure skating choreographer Shae Lynne Bourne is behind “The Lion King’s” impressive choreography. I think that the crowd resonated with “The Lion King” routine because The Lion King is a childhood movie that we have all seen and can connect with. Overall it was an enjoyable and wholesome performance. I give Wakaba Higuchi’s outfit a 10/10.
JOHNNY WEIR
Skater Johnny Weir has had many outfits throughout his skating years all beautifully designed and worn. Johnny Weir could honestly rock a potato bag in the rink if possible, but what an iconic outfit this was. The pink and the black are highlighted so well with his figure and the front is stunning. The little ties and frills at the front and the deep neckline look so spectacular. The flavors are all there. He had great style pulling this out in the 2010 Olympics. Of course he has had other iconic fits such as the swan costume in his 2005-2006 season but this pink and black one stood out! The “man cleavage” and the cut sleeves are all beautifully designed.
ALYSSA LIU
Alysa Liu has been a stunning skater since her teenage years, but she rocked this blue outfit in her free skate! She looks like a fairy going out there on the ice and giving it her all at the 2022 Beijing Olympics. Though her red outfit was bold in the short program, this blue one compliments her chill but vibrant energy on the ice!
Short Program Outfit
Japanese Figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu, also known as the Ice Fairy by his fans, is a skater who knows what to wear to truly get the internet screaming. Hanyu has trended in social media multiple times in the past, ranging from his performances to the fan interactions. The topic that took the cake for the most talked about would be for his beautiful costumes, and the ones he wore for the 2022 Olympics definitely didn’t disappoint. Hanyu’s short program outfit was designed with rhinestones and flowers with colors ranging from pastel blues, purples, and whites. The kimono was beautifully pulled together with a black and gold belt with a small bow in the center to tie it all together.
Free skate Outfit
Now onto his freeskate outfit. To start the colors gold, blue, and white collaborate to create an ice-like design which fits well with his “Ice Fairy” nickname. The outfit includes icicle-like fabric cuts at the bottom connecting to his collar by a tree branch-like shape. On the ice-like branches of the tree are little rhinestones such as the ones in his short program outfit, that resemble buds, connecting with the tree-like design. To finish, the sleeves also include the same pastel blues and whites with rhinestones spread about, and ending with Yuzuru’s dark blue gloves. His outfits haven’t disappointed in the past, and the olympic athlete keeps that streak going strong, and I doubt it will be ending anytime soon.
