SAMARIA HILL

Samaria Hill has been studying classical guitar for 4 years and is currently a music education major. Samaria’s classical guitar style is elegant, melodic and serene. She creates beautifully intricate ballads and translates pure emotion through her guitar.

How did you find out about 1 rad and what made you want to participate?

I first found out about SheShreds from Instagram and participated in 1 riff a day in 2020. During that time I was doing videos of electric guitar. I actually became a finalist that year and it was really fun and I learned a lot. I was younger then and to come back and do it when I’m older was an insightful experience.

When did you start playing classical guitar?

When I went into my sophomore year of high school, the school I went to had an amazing guitar ensemble. I went from the beginner class to the advanced college credit guitar ensemble. I fell in love with everything classical guitar. It was a whole new world for me at first and at times it still is. I knew then that classical guitar was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Especially teach classical guitar.

What techniques are used in classical guitar that are not used in other styles?

Techniques used in classical guitar that are not used in other styles I would say is most importantly how we pick the guitar. We use a combination of fingertips and fingernails. This allows us to project the most sound and also get the best tone.

#1RAD Day 9

She shreds is so welcoming and I love the community surrounded with it. It brings people together to learn and connect. The diversity within She Shreds is what I find really amazing! She Shreds provides representation and I love to see it. It’s what music needs. “

What was your 1 rad experience like and what was your personal goal for 1 Rad?

My personal goal for 1RAD was to become more connected with my instrument again. Being in college and feeling like I didn’t have enough time for my instrument really affected me mentally. It was absolutely amazing to fall in love with my instrument again.

Who were some of your favorite 1 Rad participants this year?

Some of my favorites from 1RAD are Liyah @Knottybass, Lynn Welden @Treespots, and Adira Sharkey @adirashark.

What is your creative process like?

I really wanted to make progress this year, so I went through pieces I have been working on. It was really challenging but in the end I feel like I did grow as a musician. I got really creative with my videos. I had a whole setup and I think they turned out pretty cool.

Which artist/band inspires your playing?

Gulli Bjnorsson, JiJi Guitar, Arlo Parks,  Lauryn Hill, and Thomas Flippen.

Do you have any music released?

I have videos out on YouTube of two pieces I composed. Other than that I really want to work on recording an album for classical guitar. I am currently working on composing pieces but I am making sure I take my time and be as creative as I can.
